Supervised Independence

Otra vez me voy al sur de Roma para encontrarme con Supervised Independence, una obra que el artista francés Rero realizó para la pasada edición del Outdoor Urban Art Festival.

El artista ha encontrado en la tipografía Verdana una herramienta de comunicación universal por ser una de las tipografías más conocidas y estandarizas al estar incluida en todos los sistemas operativos informáticos actuales. El gigante IKEA ya se decantó por el uso de esta fuente desterrando su anterior tipografía corporativa: la Futura.

Rero tacha sus obras tipográficas con una línea a modo de "autocensura", un intento de ocultar un mensaje crítico. No intenta crear opinión en el espectador, la interpretación es abierta.

En este caso, Supervised Independence es el oxímoron que el artista utiliza para examinar los retos y derrotas de nuestra sociedad.

Supervised Independence

Once again I'm going to the south of Rome to find Supervised Independence, a work by the French artist Rero made ​​for last Outdoor Urban Art Festival Edition.

The artist has found in Verdana typeface an universal communication tool as one of the best known and standarized for being included in all modern computer operating systems typefaces. The giant IKEA decided to use this typeface banishing his previous corporate one: Futura.

Rero blemish his typographic works with a line as a "self-censorship", an attempt to hide a critical message. He doesn't try to create an opinion in the audience, interpretation is open.

In this case, Supervised Independence is the oxymoron that the artist utilizes to examine the challenges and defeats of our society.

Entre todos los rótulos de Roma hay unos que chocan por su coincidencia con otros rótulos españoles: los que contienen la palabra "Bar".

He recopilado algunos que he ido viendo por la ciudad y me han llamado la atención por el hecho de mantener su tipografía, su color y su soporte de siempre, despreocupados de si tienen una letra rota o directamente la han perdido, si se ha fundido una bombilla o si los cables se ven demasiado.

Simplemente están ahí impasibles al paso del tiempo, manteniendo su esencia y su personalidad. Bueno, realmente, como el resto de la ciudad.

Bar

Among all signs of Rome, there are few I've found interensting by its coincidence with other Spanish labels: which contains the word "Bar".

I've compiled some of them I've been seeing around the city and attracts my attention to the fact of keeping the typography, the color and theirs original support, unconcerned if they have a letter broken or directly lost, if a bulb have been fused or if theirs cables are too visibles.

They're just there, impassively standing the test of time, maintaining theirs essence and personality. Well, actually, like the rest of the city.

Muchos conoceréis a este artista, pero para los que no, os cuento lo que he recopilado y resumido.

Blu es un artista italiano cuyo ámbito de trabajo se centra en la calle. Su historia y orígenes están ligados a Bolonia. La principal característica de su trabajo es sin duda el gran formato que emplea en sus obras, con un estilo de dibujo muy personal. La crítica social, la invitación a la reflexión o directamente el ataque al establishment son el sello de su obra. Para ello recurre frecuentemente al simbolismo.

Sus trabajos a veces vienen marcados por la polémica, creando adeptos y detractores, incluso dentro de sus propios clientes. Es conocido el conflicto que hubo entre él y el MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art de Los Angeles USA) que, sin haber llegado a finalizar un encargo, decidió borrar su trabajo. Para no desviarme del tema de esta entrada Blu lo resume así en su web:

1. El MOCA contactó conmigo para realizar un mural
2. Fui a los Ángeles a pintar la pieza y casi al terminarla
3. El director del MOCA decide borrarla
4. Al día siguiente el mural fue borrado por los trabajadores del MOCA
5. Los periodistas no están todavía seguros si a esto se le puede llamar censura, así que comienzan a pedir mi versión sobre lo sucedido

También es muy conocido por sus vídeos de animación en los que cada fotograma es elaborado de forma manual y directamente en la calle. Los más conocidos son Muto y Big Bang Big Boom.

Blu (I)

Many of you know this artist, but for those who do not, I'll tell you something about him.

Blu is an Italian artist who focuses his work on the street. His story and origins are linked to Bologna. The main feature of his work is its large format, with a very personal drawing style. Social criticism, his call on us to reflect or directly an expression to attack the establishment are the hallmark of his work, often using symbolism.

His works are sometimes marked by controversy, creating followers and detractors, even within their own customers. It's known the conflict between Blu and the MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles USA) whose director, without Blu having reached the end of the mural, decided to erase the wall with white paint. Not to stray from the topic of this post, Blu sums it on their website:

1. MOCA asks me to paint a mural
2. I go to L.A. to paint the piece and I almost finish it
3. The MOCA Director decide to erase the wall
4. On the next day the mural is erased by MOCA workers
5. Journalists are still not sure if this can be called censorship, so they start asking my review about that
