Testaccio

El barrio de Testaccio se encuentra al sur del centro de Roma, aún dentro de la muralla Aureliana. A pesar de su ubicación privilegiada es un barrio popular con un espíritu romano en estado puro. Feudo de la Roma AS y de gente de clase trabajadora, este barrio está tomando las riendas como escenario de las manifestaciones artísticas más actuales ya que en él se encuentra una de las sedes del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Roma Macro Testaccio. Sus calles representan la Roma más genuina, contradictoria: decadente pero alegre, tranquilo pero lleno de vida… Podemos disfrutar por sus calles de paseos tipográficos fijándonos en los viejos letreros de los comercios o deleitarnos con monumentos históricos como la pirámide Cestia o el monte di cocci.

Testaccio is located in the south of the center of Rome, even inside the Aurelian walls. Despite its location it's a popular neighborhood with a pure Roman spirit. Feud of AS Roma and working class people, this neighborhood is taking the reins as the scene of the latest artistic expression as it is one of the venues of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome Macro Testaccio  Its streets are the most genuine Rome, contradictory: decadent but happy, calm but full of life ... We can enjoy by looking through the streets of the old typographical signs from shops or delight with historical monuments like the Pyramid of Cestius or Monte di cocci.

The Serigrapher

En junio, el grupo HB organizó el evento The Serigrapher en el Atelier Montez, que consistía en la realización en directo de 3 modelos de camisetas a cargo de tres artistas de graffiti romanos: Sugo TRV, Vela THE e Imos Nº. Durante el evento podía verse el proceso completo de estampación, desde el dibujo original hasta su paso a la tela. En el evento también se podía ver una exposición de diseños para estampación sobre camisetas y sudaderas a cargo del grupo HB Production. Todo ello amenizado con DJ's y música en directo.

In June, the HB crew organized The Serigrapher at Atelier Montez, an event which consist of performing live 3 models of tshirts by three Roman graffiti artists: Sugo TRV, Vela THE and Imos Nº  During the event you could see the entire printing process, from the original drawing until it passes to the fabric. In the event you could also see an exhibition of designs for printing on t-shirts and sweatshirts by HB Production. All enlivened with DJ's and live music.

Garage

Distintos letreros de "garage" vistos en las calles de Roma. Los romanos tienen un estilo especial para rotular este tipo de espacios, con una clara preferencia del rojo sobre blanco y hecho de forma manual.

Semáforos tipográficos romanos

El otro día, en la calle Giacomo Puccini, he encontrado este viejo semáforo romano para peatones todavía en funcionamiento con la palabra ALT para prohibir el paso y la palabra AVANT para permitirlo. Es el primero de este tipo que veo y de nuevo me ha hecho pensar en cómo resisten algunos elementos de la ciudad al paso del tiempo y a la modernidad.

Roman typographic semaphore

The other day, at Giacomo Puccini Street, I've found this old Roman pedestrian semaphore still working with the word ALT to ban the pass and the word AVANT to allow it. It's the first of this type that I've seen and it's made ​​to me thinking again about how some elements of the city resist over time and modernity.

Il muro - (I) Lettere

 

Il muro (El muro), es un proyecto mural que consiste en la intervención de unos tableros con motivos que de una manera u otra tienen que ver con la ciudad de Roma. Todos los proyectos de Il muro se realizan en el Estudio 23 de la Academia de España en Roma y se engloban dentro del proyecto de "Roma: Línea B".

Esta primera pieza es una interpretación de los rótulos que he ido encontrando en la ciudad durante mis excursiones. Muchos tienen importancia por su ubicación, otros por su estética, pero todos de algún modo están relacionados con el diseño gráfico, con Roma y con sus calles.

Il muro (The Wall), is a mural project that involves the intervention of a few boards with elements that, in one way or another, have relation with the city of Rome. All projects of Il muro are performed in the Studio 23 at the Academy of Spain in Rome and are included within the project "Roma: Linea B".

This first piece is an interpretation of the labels that have been found all around the city during my tours. Many are important for its location, other for its aesthetic, but all of them are related with graphic design, Rome and its streets.

El barrio de Testaccio nos ofrece, entre otras curiosidades, un homenaje a dos grandes personalidades históricas italianas dentro de las artes gráficas: un impresor, Aldo Manuzio y un tipógrafo, Giambattista Bodoni, creador de la archiconocida fuente tipográfica Bodoni, que supone la culminación de 300 años de evolución de la tipografía romana.

Typographic streets

The neighborhood of Testaccio offers, among other curiosities, a tribute to two great Italian historical figures within the graphic arts: a printer, Aldo Manuzio and a typographer, Giambattista Bodoni, creator of the well-known typeface Bodoni, which is the culmination of 300 years of evolution of the Roman typeface.

Supervised Independence

Otra vez me voy al sur de Roma para encontrarme con Supervised Independence, una obra que el artista francés Rero realizó para la pasada edición del Outdoor Urban Art Festival.

El artista ha encontrado en la tipografía Verdana una herramienta de comunicación universal por ser una de las tipografías más conocidas y estandarizas al estar incluida en todos los sistemas operativos informáticos actuales. El gigante IKEA ya se decantó por el uso de esta fuente desterrando su anterior tipografía corporativa: la Futura.

Rero tacha sus obras tipográficas con una línea a modo de "autocensura", un intento de ocultar un mensaje crítico. No intenta crear opinión en el espectador, la interpretación es abierta.

En este caso, Supervised Independence es el oxímoron que el artista utiliza para examinar los retos y derrotas de nuestra sociedad.

Supervised Independence

Once again I'm going to the south of Rome to find Supervised Independence, a work by the French artist Rero made ​​for last Outdoor Urban Art Festival Edition.

The artist has found in Verdana typeface an universal communication tool as one of the best known and standarized for being included in all modern computer operating systems typefaces. The giant IKEA decided to use this typeface banishing his previous corporate one: Futura.

Rero blemish his typographic works with a line as a "self-censorship", an attempt to hide a critical message. He doesn't try to create an opinion in the audience, interpretation is open.

In this case, Supervised Independence is the oxymoron that the artist utilizes to examine the challenges and defeats of our society.

Entre todos los rótulos de Roma hay unos que chocan por su coincidencia con otros rótulos españoles: los que contienen la palabra "Bar".

He recopilado algunos que he ido viendo por la ciudad y me han llamado la atención por el hecho de mantener su tipografía, su color y su soporte de siempre, despreocupados de si tienen una letra rota o directamente la han perdido, si se ha fundido una bombilla o si los cables se ven demasiado.

Simplemente están ahí impasibles al paso del tiempo, manteniendo su esencia y su personalidad. Bueno, realmente, como el resto de la ciudad.

Bar

Among all signs of Rome, there are few I've found interensting by its coincidence with other Spanish labels: which contains the word "Bar".

I've compiled some of them I've been seeing around the city and attracts my attention to the fact of keeping the typography, the color and theirs original support, unconcerned if they have a letter broken or directly lost, if a bulb have been fused or if theirs cables are too visibles.

They're just there, impassively standing the test of time, maintaining theirs essence and personality. Well, actually, like the rest of the city.

SPQR finalmente

Después de todas las fases previas superadas comienza mi periplo por Roma.

Tras un verano con la idea en la cabeza, al llegar a la ciudad me encuentro con este cartel que, fuera de contexto, representa muy bien la primera sensación que tenía al establecerme aquí.

After a summer with the idea in mind, when I've arrived to the town, I find this sign that, out of context, represents very well the first feeling I had when I settled here.
